IsTariff Turmoil Driving Markets Down?
Marchwiped out January and February’s gains, pushing the S&P down about 5% YTD.The aggressive sell-off is largely driven by uncertainty around new tariffs.Starting April 2nd, Trump is expected to announce several 25% tariffs —including on foreign cars, Venezuelan oil buyers, agriculture imports, andreciprocal tariffs on major trading partners like China, the EU, andothers.
Additional potential tariffs include lumber, copper, pharmaceuticals, andsemiconductors. This market uncertainty is triggering broad sell-offs acrossindexes.
Meanwhile, the Reserve Bank of Australia is expected to hold rates steady at4.1%, with a key press conference offering insight into economicconcerns.
In the U.S., a hotter-than-expected core PCE inflation reading (0.4%) may delayor cancel anticipated Fed rate cuts. Key U.S. employment data drops throughoutthe week, culminating in Friday's unemployment rate and nonfarm payrollnumbers. With layoffs on the rise, volatility is expected to remain high.Caution is advised, especially for swing traders.
