Monday Market Must-Knows: January 9, 2023
This week marks the kick off toearnings season for US companies, with several major financial firms set toreport their results on Friday. These include Bank of America, JPMorgan,Citigroup and Wells Fargo.
Earnings season is typically viewed with optimism, as good results from thesefirms could lead to positive market reactions.
Jerome Powell, the chair of the Federal Reserve, will also be participating ina panel discussion on central bank independence in Sweden on Tuesday at8am EST, which may provide insight into his thoughts on central banks andtheir role in the economy.
Inflation, as measured by the consumer price index (CPI), has been decliningmodestly and is currently at 7.1%. The expectation is that inflation will continueto decrease, which is good news for the markets and may lead to a change inFederal Reserve policy. The next CPI report will be released onThursday at 8:30am EST.
